South Dakota has a long and vast history. It’s where Native Americans first inhabited the land and where European settlers eventually came to also settle on this same land. Many can look at South Dakota as a place where much of a push and pull of rights to the lands have proceeded into many wars between the two groups. And this is why one Lakota Warrior, Crazy Horse became a hero to many of the Native Tribes in South Dakota.
Crazy Horse embodied courage, strength, and wisdom and held a strong lifelong fight to protect the Lakota culture, heritage, and lands. Making him a hero many ways, the importance of a dedicated memorial in honor him came without any question. In 1948, it was Korczak Ziokowski who began his work on what would be the world’s largest mountain carving once complete.
The passing of Ziokowski left an unfinished face of Crazy Horse carved in granite in the Black Hills. In 1998 workers did manage to complete the face carving which currently stands at roughly 80 feet-tall. Once Ziokowski’s full vision of the Crazy Horse Memorial is complete it will be 641 feet long and 563 feet high.
